Characteristics Of High-quality Battery Connectors
Regarding wiring, conductor cross-sections from 16 mm² to 50 mm² are available. 70 mm² and 95 mm² conductor cross-sections will also be available in the near future.
For the mating part, there is a busbar that allows for easy connection of conductors to the device via cable lugs.
High current carrying capacity: The design of the energy storage connector should be able to handle high currents, thereby enabling efficient energy transfer and reducing power loss.
Rugged Design: The design of the battery storage connector is intended to withstand harsh environmental conditions, ensuring its reliability and service life in demanding applications.
Simple and safe to operate: The storage connector should be easy to use and have a mechanism to prevent accidental disconnection, making maintenance and operation safer.
The contacts should be made of silver-plated copper alloy and certified according to UL 4128 to ensure optimal electrical contact even after more than 100 mechanical connection and disconnection cycles (under no load).
Color coding is important, such as the color coding of the positive (orange) and negative (black) connections on the connector and mating busbar connection. This creates crucial visual cues for the user regarding the connections that need to be made.
Key coding is implemented on both sides of the connector to reduce the possibility of user error or inserting the wrong side into the mating busbar connection. This special key coding allows the connector to be inserted in almost any orientation, avoiding unnecessary mechanical stress on the cables.
A locking mechanism secures the plug and socket. This mechanism is a fundamental safety feature considering the large amount of energy managed by this connector and the risk of catastrophic arc faults if accidental disconnection occurs under load. Furthermore, slight movement of the connector could reduce the contact area and create hot spots, potentially leading to a BESS fire. This locking feature prevents both scenarios and allows for disconnection in a very practical way by pressing a button.
